Does window film help in Chicago winters?

Most people buy window film for summer. Here's what it does in a Chicago winter, and when a winter install makes sense.

Standard solar film in winter

Standard solar film is designed to block the sun's heat. In winter, that means it also blocks some of the free warmth the sun would have added on a clear day. For most homes in the Chicago area, the summer comfort and glare control are worth it, and the main glare problem in winter (low sun, snow reflection) still gets handled.

Films that help hold heat in

Some films have a low-emissivity (low-E) coating that reflects heat from inside the room back in, while still blocking heat from the sun in summer. They're designed to help year-round. Whether they make sense depends on your windows: if you already have modern low-E double-pane windows, the gain is smaller. We'll tell you honestly when we see the glass.

Can film be installed in winter?

Yes. Film goes on the inside of the glass, so it can be installed year-round. In cold weather, it takes longer to fully cure, often several weeks. A little haze or a few water pockets in the first days or weeks are normal and clear up on their own. Don't clean the inside of the glass until it's cured.

Glass and cold weather

Film absorbs some heat at the glass, and cold climates make the type of glass more important. We check your glass type before recommending a film so it's compatible with your windows.

Quick answers

Straight answers before anyone comes out to measure.

Will window film lower my heating bill?

Standard solar film isn't designed for that. Low-E films can help hold heat in, depending on your existing windows.

How long does film take to cure in winter?

Longer than in summer, often several weeks. Haze in the first few weeks is normal.
